What custom contour palette boxes are used for

A contour palette is a small set of shades that shape the face: a light shade, a mid tone, a deep shade, and often a highlight. The shades are the product, so the box has to prepare the shopper for them. Custom contour palette boxes hold powder contour palettes, cream contour palettes, contour and highlight duos, and larger palettes that add a bronzer or a blush. The box protects the pans, which can crack if the palette is knocked, names the shades in a clear place, and holds the directions and ingredient list that a thin case has little room for. Good palette packaging also helps a shade range look like one family.

Sizes and how to measure

Measure the palette case, not the pans. Take the outer length, width, and thickness with the lid closed. If the case has a raised hinge or a thick lid, measure at the largest point. If you add a brush or a mirror, measure those too. Allow 1/8 to 1/4 inch per side for clearance. Send us the numbers and we build the dieline around them.

Box styles and closures

A tuck end carton is the standard choice for a thin palette, because it ships flat and keeps the case sliding in and out smoothly. A sleeve box slides over a tray and suits a flat case. A drawer box slides out of a sleeve and creates a reveal. A magnetic closure rigid box feels sturdy and suits a gift set or a palette with a brush. A lift-off lid rigid box holds a taller set. A hang tab version fits a retail peg. These styles can be made as custom contour palette packaging for retail or for mailing.

Materials and thickness

Folding cartons use paperboard of about 300 to 400 GSM, which prints crisp color and keeps a flat case from bending. Kraft board gives a natural look. Rigid boxes use greyboard of about 1.5 to 2 mm under a printed wrap and suit a larger palette or a gift set. For mail, E-flute or B-flute corrugated mailers add crush protection, which matters for pressed pans. Exact thickness is confirmed for each order. Every box uses eco-friendly materials sourced from certified suppliers, and recycled paperboard and kraft board are available.

Printing, coatings, and finishes

Print full color CMYK or match your brand with Pantone spot colors, on the outside only or the outside and inside. A contour palette box often shows the shades as printed swatches or a color band, so shoppers can see the range from the shelf. Keep the palette name and the shade names clear on the front or the back. Matte lamination looks calm, gloss adds shine, and soft-touch adds a velvety feel. Spot UV can pick out a pattern or the logo, and foil in gold, silver, or rose gold adds an accent. Embossing and debossing add texture to a name. Inserts and windows

A paperboard or corrugated insert holds the palette flat so it does not slide or tilt when the box is moved. For a palette with a brush, the insert has an opening for each item. A die-cut window with clear film shows the pans, which helps shoppers see the shades. If your case is plain, a solid front with a foil logo may look better. A clean white insert shows the color of the pans best.
