What spout pouches are used for

A spout pouch is a flexible bag with a fitment at the top, which is a small plastic spout with a screw cap. The pouch stands up on a bottom gusset, and the customer pours or squeezes the product out of the spout. Brands use spout pouches for liquid hand soap, body wash, lotion, shampoo refills, juice, sauces, baby food, and gels. A spout pouch is light, ships flat before it is filled, and often uses less plastic than a rigid bottle of the same size. Many beauty and home care brands use spout pouches as refill packs, so customers can refill a bottle they already own.

Sizes and how to measure

Spout pouch size is written as width x height x bottom gusset, plus a spout size. Choose the size by the volume you plan to fill, and leave a little room at the top, because pouches are not filled to the brim. Small pouches of about 50 ml to 100 ml suit samples and baby food, mid sizes of about 200 ml to 500 ml suit retail products, and large pouches of about 1 L suit refills. The spout size sets how fast the product pours, and a thick product needs a wider spout than a thin one. Send your product and your fill volume and we suggest the right size.

Materials, spouts, and caps

Spout pouches are made from layers of film. The layers give the pouch its strength and its barrier against light and air, and the right mix depends on your product. Pouches come in clear, white, matte, glossy, and metalized film. The spout and cap come in several sizes and colors, and some caps have a tamper band or a flip top. Eco friendly spout pouches may use a single material film that suits recycling programs where they are available. Printing and finishing

Custom printed spout pouches are usually full color printing on the front and back, with a matte or gloss surface. Printed spout pouches can carry a bold front panel, a short brand story on the back, and the label text you supply. A window shaped to your design can show the product. Keep the main message near the center of the front, and keep important text away from the seals and the spout. At a large run size, the same design can be printed on every pouch, and you can plan several designs for a collection.

Labeling notes

If your pouch holds a product for sale, the label must carry the text that the law requires for your product, such as ingredients, net contents, and warnings. You supply the text and the layout, and we print what you send. We do not write or check label text or claims, so please have your final label reviewed by a person who knows the rules for your product. Food and drink packaging has its own rules for materials and labels, and you are responsible for the food contact rules for your product.

Supply artwork as a vector AI or PDF file with fonts outlined and images at 300 DPI in CMYK. If you have no artwork yet, free design support and a free consultation are included, and our team can help lay out the logo and the text from your brand colors. You review and approve the artwork before production starts.
